DHAKA, June 14, 2026 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain today inaugurated intensive care unit (ICU) services at 10 district hospitals across the country, aiming to strengthen critical care facilities at the district level.
The newly established ICUs have been set up under the Emergency Response and Pandemic Preparedness (ERPP) project and were formally launched through a programme held at Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital this morning.
The inauguration ceremony began at 10:00am with the minister attending the main event at Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital, while the remaining nine hospitals joined virtually.
The hospitals where new ICU services have been introduced are- Munshiganj 250-bed District Hospital, Tangail 250-bed District Hospital, Sunamganj 250-bed District Sadar Hospital, Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, Chuadanga District Hospital, Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital, Jashore 250-bed General Hospital, Sherpur 250-bed District Sadar Hospital, Madaripur District Hospital and Bagerhat District Hospital.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, each ICU unit has been equipped with modern medical equipment, including paediatric ventilators and oxygen concentrators, alongside other essential critical care facilities.
The ministry also said that the required manpower has been recruited to ensure the effective operation of the newly established units.
Officials concerned said the launch of the ICUs would significantly enhance critical care services for both children and adults suffering from severe and complex illnesses at the district level.
They said the initiative would help reduce pressure on hospitals in the capital and other major cities by enabling critically ill patients to receive advanced treatment closer to their homes, ensuring quicker and more effective healthcare services.
The ICU facilities have been established as part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and service capacity across the country under the World Bank-supported Emergency Response and Pandemic Preparedness (ERPP) project.
