JASHORE, Mar 28, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit today said the incumbent government is looking for a permanent solution to Bhabadah waterlogging in Jashore.

He said the BNP governments, during its 1991-1996 and 2001-2006 tenures, took various initiatives to relieve the people of vast areas of Abhaynagar, Manirampur and Keshabpur upazilas of Jashore from waterlogging.

Amit said if the next government had continued these works and not looted public money in the name of development, then this problem would have been solved to a large extent by now.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government is concerned over the sufferings of the people, so it wants to resolve the problems of the people of this region.

The state minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an event organised to inaugurate the re-excavation of Buruli canal in Keshabpur upazila here.

The event was organised at Buruli Primary School grounds this morning.

Later, the state minister inaugurated the re-excavation of Buruli Canal by cutting soil with a spade.

In his speech, Amit said on the one hand, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman took measures to retain irrigation water throughout the year through the canal excavation programme, and on the other hand, he provided electricity to villages through rural electricity, so that irrigation could be ensured through electricity if necessary.

Ziaur Rahman's initiative changed the fate of farmers and changed the face of Bangladesh, he said.

The state minister said the succeeding governments did not take the initiative to dig canals again.

He directed the officials of the local administration and Bangladesh Water Development Board to remove the dams from the rivers and canals of Bhabadah area and activate sluice gates before the monsoon begins.

Amit called upon the local youths to join the excavation work conducted by the army on voluntary basis.

The inaugural ceremony was chaired by Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan.

Jashore District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, District BNP President Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, Police Superintendent Syed Rafiqul Islam, and Keshabpur Upazila BNP President Abul Hossain Azad were present, among others.
