DHAKA, March 27, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh mission in Rome has observed the country's Independence and National Day with due dignity, highlighting the Liberation War's legacy and strengthening Bangladesh-Italy ties through diplomatic engagements and cultural programmes.
The day's programme on Thursday began with the hoisting of the national flag by Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy ATM Rokibul Haque at the embassy premises, followed by the national anthem, according to a message received here today.
A discussion meeting was later held where a one-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War. Messages from the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out, while a documentary on Independence Day was screened.
In the evening, a reception was hosted at a hotel in Rome, attended by Italian dignitaries, diplomats, senior officials of UN agencies and members of the Bangladeshi community. Director General for Asia and Oceania at the Italian Foreign Ministry Ambassador Alessandra Schiavo attended as special guest.
In his remarks, the ambassador paid tribute to the martyrs and highlighted Bangladesh's achievements and potential, urging collective efforts to build a prosperous nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He also noted the steady progress in Bangladesh-Italy relations.
Ambassador Schiavo emphasised enhancing cooperation in trade, education, disaster management and defence and stressed facilitating skilled migration from Bangladesh through legal channels.
The event also featured a "Bangladesh Corner" showcasing traditional sarees and handicrafts, while guests were served Bangladeshi and Italian cuisine.
