CHATTOGRAM, March 20, 2026 (BSS) - Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced that the Zia Memorial Museum in the Kazir Deuri area of the city will be soon declared as a heritage site.
Necessary renovation work will be carried out to address the infrastructure issues that have arisen due to long-term neglegence of the previous fascist government, he said.
The minister emphasized the importance of quickly repairing the museum, as its structural condition have worsened over time. Despite its beauty and historical significance, the lack of maintenance has made the establishment vulnerable, with a risk of damage in the event of a major earthquake.
The Finance Minister made these remarks during his visit to the Zia Memorial Museum near the Chattogram Circuit House on Friday afternoon. Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin and Deputy Commissioner Zahidul Islam Miah briefed the minister on the museum's current state.
Highlighting the historical significance of the building, Amir Khasrus said that it was where President Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh's independence and initiated the Liberation War. The site holds significance in the country's history and people's emotions. He also mentioned that President Ziaur Rahman was martyred at the Circuit House in Chattogram on May 30, 1981, so it is crucial to preserve his memory through the museum.
Chowdhury expressed concern that establishments related to the Liberation War, including the Zia Memorial Museum in Chattogram, have not received adequate attention. He pledged to quickly declare the museum a heritage site and initiate renovation efforts to ensure its preservation for future generations.

The Finance Minister called on everyone to join efforts in preserving these invaluable historical assets.
Amir Khasru highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure renovations at the museum before any modernization efforts can be undertaken. He emphasized the importance of quick action in this regard and stated that discussions with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and relevant authorities will be held to plan for the renovation and maintenance of the museum.
