DHAKA, Aug 25, 2026 (BSS) - Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam today stressed the importance of strengthening ties between Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) across key sectors, emphasizing that diplomacy directly impacts the lives and future of the young generation.

"Diplomacy is not confined merely to government offices or international organizations, it directly connects with the lives and future of the youth," the VC said.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a dialogue titled 'Meet the Ambassador: Talking Diplomacy for Cooperation' organised jointly by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Bangladesh at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium on the campus.

Ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh Michael Miller attended the event as the guest of honor.

Prof. Obaidul Islam underlined the need to expand collaboration in education, research, technology, climate change, trade, human rights, good governance, and economic development. 

He called for creating platforms where students can exchange views and directly engage with diplomats to hone their critical thinking, global awareness, and civic responsibilities.

Highlighting the university's vision, the VC noted that Dhaka University aims to foster an international academic environment that prepares students to participate confidently in global intellectual and professional spheres while aligning research with national priorities. 

He urged for stronger partnerships among diplomatic missions, the government, 
academia, development partners, the private sector, and civil society.

EU Ambassador Michael Miller stated that the EU views Bangladesh not just as 
a market or development partner, but as a key political, economic, and 
strategic ally. 

He highlighted potential cooperation in democracy, governance, climate 
action, trade, and higher education scholarships. Ambassador Miller also 
praised Bangladesh's economic trajectory, noting the EU's interest in working 
positively toward a potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA) alongside necessary 
policy transparency and institutional reforms.
The event, attended by Social Sciences Faculty acting Dean Prof Kazi Mohammad 
Mahbubur Rahman and CGS President Zillur Rahman alongside faculty members and 
students, concluded with an interactive Q&A session.
