THAKURGAON, Feb 5, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the upcoming national elections will be a very important opportunity for Bangladesh.
"For 15 years, the people of the country have not been able to exercise their voting rights in a real sense. BNP did not participate in the last three elections, and even if it participated in one election, the result of the polls was already predetermined," he said.
"During the 2024 election, we were all in prison. But this time the situation has changed, and an opportunity has come for a fair and acceptable election," he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks while speaking at a path rally at Farabari High School ground in Thakurgaon-1 constituency here.
The BNP secretary general said the interim government is interested in organising a fair election and the opportunity for the people to vote has been created as a result of the student-people movement.
He hoped that there would be a beautiful and transparent election.
Emphasising communal harmony, he said Hindus and Muslims must remain united.
Addressing the Hindu community, Fakhrul said, "You should go to the polling centres without fear. We will not let you suffer any harm as long as we have a drop of blood in our bodies."
He also said this is the last election of his life, urging all Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians to give him a chance to work by voting for 'sheaf of paddy" symbol.
About Jamaat-e-Islami, Mirza Fakhrul said in 1971, Jamaat wanted to resist the independence of Bangladesh in cooperation with the Pakistani occupying forces and it was never in favour of the country's democracy.
He said, "The politics of slogans is over. This time, we have to do politics of action." Referring to BNP chairman Tarique Rahman's plan, he once again all to remain united and vote for the 'sheaf of paddy'.
