BAU, Mymensingh, Jan 13, 2026 (BSS)- Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has formally handed over a comprehensive treatment guideline book on Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) affecting cattle to the Department of Livestock Services (DLS).
The guideline was developed by the Department of Pathology of BAU with financial support from the Livestock and Dairy Development Project (LDDP) under the project titled “Investigation of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) Affected Herds and Formulation of Control Strategies.”
The handover took place at 2:00 pm today (Tuesday) at the conference room of the Department of Livestock Services in Khamarbari, Dhaka, during a program titled “Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) Treatment Guideline Handover Ceremony.”
The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal, Director of the Livestock and Dairy Development Project (LDDP).
The keynote paper was presented by Professor Dr. Rokhsana Parveen, Principal Investigator of the project and Professor of the Department of Pathology, BAU. The Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, Dr. Md. Abu Sufian, attended the event as the chief guest.
Special guests included Professor Dr. Md. Mokbul Hossain of the Department of Pathology, BAU, Dr. Md. Boyzar Rahman, Director (Administration), DLS, Dr. Begum Shamsunnahar Ahmed, Director (Extension), DLS, Dr. A. B. M. Khalekuzzaman, Director (Production), DLS, and Dr. Israat Jarin, Upazila Livestock Officer (LR) and PhD student.
While presenting the keynote paper, Professor Dr. Rokhsana Parveen highlighted the objectives, achievements and detailed contents of the treatment guideline developed under the project.
She stated that since LSD is a viral disease, along with prevention, effective treatment of infected animals is crucial. The guideline will serve as an important practical reference for field-level veterinarians.
Following the presentation, an open discussion session was held under the chairmanship of the chief guest, where officials and veterinarians from different levels of the Department of Livestock Services shared their opinions.
In his speech, the Director General of DLS, Dr. Md. Abu Sufian, said that LSD has been presented in the country for more than six years and that changes in the disease pattern over time have led to an increased mortality rate.
He added that while the Livestock Research Institute (LRI) is working on disease prevention through vaccine production, the need for a standardized treatment guideline was crucial—a gap that has now been fulfilled through this initiative.
