DHAKA, Jan 7, 2026 (BSS) - The government has decided to deploy Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel in 489 upazilas across the country, including the capital city, to ensure the forthcoming 13th national election is held in a free, fair, impartial, peaceful and festive manner.
According to a Home Ministry circular issued Tuesday, BGB will be deployed in 489 of the country's 495 upazilas. Six upazilas-Sandwip, Hatia, Kutubdia, Dakop, Monpura and Rangabali-have been excluded from the deployment plan.
Earlier, BGB said in a press release that a total of 1,151 platoons have already been deployed nationwide to maintain peace and law and order during the election period.
The force will work as a mobile and striking unit under the "In Aid to the Civil Power" provision, supporting local civil administrations from December 29, 2023, to January 10, 2024.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies will be deployed across the country for seven days surrounding the upcoming parliamentary election, scheduled for February 12, with the aim of ensuring law and order and facilitating a credible electoral process.
The circular also stated that the deployment will begin on February 8, four days ahead of polling day, and will continue until February 14.
To conduct the election in a free, fair, peaceful and impartial manner, police, BGB, Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP), and the Coast Guard will be responsible for maintaining law and order, while members of the armed forces will assist local civil authorities under the "In Aid to Civil Power" provision.
The election will involve around 127.5 million voters, with voting to be held at approximately 260,000 booths in nearly 43,000 polling stations across 300 constituencies.
In total, more than 800,000 personnel from various forces will be deployed for election duties.
Of them, about 550,000 members of Ansar and VDP will be stationed at polling centres, while around 150,000 police personnel, 100,000 members of the armed forces and 35,000 BGB members will be tasked with maintaining overall security.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Coast Guard will also assist in ensuring a secure election environment.
