DHAKA, Dec 27, 2025 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter
today said shrimp exporters and producers must follow international standards
and practices for exporting shrimp.

"Taste and quality of Bangladeshi shrimp are globally recognized. However, in
the international market, not only size or taste matters; the quality of
shrimp, environmentally friendly production methods, and antibiotic residue
status are strictly examined," she said.

She said these while visiting the Faltita Fish Landing Center in Fakirhat
upazila of Bagerhat district and exchanging views with fish wholesalers.

Farida said that the illegal entry of goods from abroad cannot be acceptable
as it harms government revenue, and traders also cannot benefit fairly.

In many cases, the goods ultimately have to be discarded, which is a waste of
national resources, she said, adding, "Due to procedural shortcomings,
Bangladesh has not yet been able to reap the full benefits from this sector."

As there are legal restrictions on collecting fish fry from natural sources,
the number of hatcheries in the country must be increased further to boost
fry production, the adviser said.

Director General (DG) of the Department of Fisheries Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf,
Joint Secretary of Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Dr. Abu Nayeem Muhammad
Abdus Sabur, Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten and District
Fisheries Officer Raj Kumar Biswas were present, among others, on the
occasion.
