SC Legal Aid Office provides assistance in 3,343 cases

DHAKA, Dec 21, 2025 (BSS) – The Supreme Court Legal Aid Office has so far provided legal assistance in 3,343 cases to underprivileged litigants at government expense.

The information was disclosed in a report on legal aid assistance issued by the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO), covering the period from 2009 to November 2025.

According to the report, a total of 451,886 cases across the country received legal assistance at government expense for underprivileged litigants during this period.

Of these, legal assistance was provided in 3,343 cases through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, in 443,999 cases through the 64 District Legal Aid Offices across the country, and in 4,544 cases through the Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells, the report said.

At present, legal services are being provided through the 64 District Legal Aid Offices, the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, the Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells, the National Legal Aid Helpline Call Center (toll-free “16699”), as well as for prison inmates.

The Supreme Court Legal Aid Office was established in 2015. Since then, the programme of providing legal services at government expense to underprivileged litigants has been in operation.

Under the Legal Aid Services Act, legal assistance is provided at government expense with the objective of ensuring access to justice for financially disadvantaged and justice-deprived people.

The activities of the NLASO are conducted under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
