Chief Justice has set exceptional judicial standard: Attorney General

DHAKA, Dec 18, 2025 (BSS) - Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has set an exceptional judicial standard through his wisdom, intellect, and foresight.

"You inherited a judicial system in which, 'rule of convenience' had prevailed over the 'rule of law.' Over the past sixteen months, you have served as a skilled architect of institutional integrity. During your short tenure, you have undertaken numerous transformative measures," he said.

The chief state counsel said these while addressing the farewell reception to the Chief Justice at Court No-1 (the Chief Justice's courtroom) of the Appellate Division. 

Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and Supreme Court Bar Association President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon accorded the farewell reception to the Chief Justice on behalf of the Attorney General's Office and the Bar.

The attorney general spoke about some initiatives adopted or implemented by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed. 

Referring initiatives like formation of Supreme Court Secretariat, merit-based and transparent appointment system, boosting morale of the judges and ensuring accountability, digitization and formulating law to establish commercial court, Md Asaduzzaman said the chief justice has became a 'Prometheus' through his far-reaching vision, firm perspective, and unwavering integrity.

"As Chief Justice of Bangladesh, during your short tenure, you have established an exceptional judicial standard, which I have termed 'The Refaat Standard'-a tangible symbol of judicial courage and utmost transparency," he added.

At the beginning of today's reception programme, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, followed by Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, delivered speeches highlighting the eventful professional life of Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, who is set to retire as the 25th Chief Justice on December 27.

He was sworn in as the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh on August 11, 2024.
