Deniers of independence, democracy belongs no place in politics: Barkat Ullah

CUMILLA, Sept 27, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Vice-Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu today said those who deny the 1971 Liberation War and democratic rights of people have no right to do politics in Bangladesh.

"The deniers of the Great Liberation War of 1971 and those who do not believe in the democratic rights of the people do not have any right to do politics in Bangladesh," Bulu said while inaugurating the conference of Cumilla South District BNP at Cumilla Town Hall ground this afternoon.

Criticizing Proportional Representative (PR) system, he said, "A vested quarter is raising the issue of PR system only to foil the election. People want to vote for someone who will stand by them in happiness and sorrow, work for their development, and remain present in their constituency on behalf of them."

He urged voters to cast their ballots for the BNP's symbol "sheaf of paddy" in the upcoming election to continue the development legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.

Mentioning President Ziaur Rahman's role in declaring independence in 1971, Bulu said Zia transformed Bangladesh from a so called 'bottomless basket' into a country respected globally for economic and moral strength.

Recalling the tenure of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he said female students were given stipends and opportunities for free education, which increased access to education for girls nationwide.

BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed addressed the conference as the chief discussant.

Former MPs Monirul Hoque Chowdhury and Haji Aminur Rashid Yasin, Cumilla Divisional Organizing Secretary Principal Selim Bhuiyan, BNP Central Industry Affairs Secretary Md. Abul Kalam, Assistant Divisional Organizing Secretary Md. Mostak Mia, and Cumilla City BNP President Udbatul Bari Abu attended as special guests.

Cumilla South District BNP Convener Jakaria Taher Suman presided over the conference and Member Secretary Ashiqur Rahman Mahmud Wasim conducted it.

Central and local BNP leaders also spoke on the occasion.
