EU ambassador visits water treatment plant in Khulna

KHULNA, Sept 12, 2025 (BSS) – Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, today visited the water treatment plant established under the Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LOGIC) project at Lakshikhola in Pankhali Union under Dakop Upazila in Khulna.

Later, he attended a views-exchange meeting with beneficiaries of the project at the Shri Shri Nitai Gaur Sebashram.

The water treatment plant, constructed under the project, produces 1,000 liters of safe drinking water per hour and 9,000 liters per day. The water is sold to beneficiaries at the affordable rate of Tk 0.50 per liter. The revenue collected is used for repair and maintenance purposes.

At the meeting, Ambassador Michael Miller said that Khulna is one of the districts in Bangladesh most affected by climate change. He emphasized the need to understand the real situation of the affected communities and added that the successful implementation of the LOGIC project has turned it into a model.

Asaduzzaman; Head of Communication M. Abdul Kaiyum; Deputy Director of the Local Government Office at the Khulna Deputy Commissioner’s office Md. Ariful Islam; LOGIC Project Manager A.K.M. Azad Rahman; Dakop UNO Md. Asmat Hossain; and other officials of the LOGIC project attended the meeting.

The LOGIC project is an important initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity of local governments to tackle the impacts of climate change. Jointly implemented by the Government of Bangladesh, UNDP, UNCDF, EU, Sweden, and Denmark, the project strengthens local government institutions to plan and finance climate adaptation strategies for vulnerable communities.

The LOGIC project is being implemented in 94 unions of 29 upazilas in nine districts: Khulna, Sunamganj, Kurigram, Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Bandarban, and Rangamati. The project was launched in 2017.
