Drone crash kills one in western Russia: regional governor

MOSCOW, July 11, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - A drone crashed into a farming area in western Russia, killing one person and wounding another, a regional governor said Friday.

"Tonight, a drone crashed into the territory of one of the agricultural enterprises of Khlevensky district," which is around 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of Moscow, Lipetsk regional governor Igor Artamonov wrote on Telegram.

"As a result, a fire broke out, which was quickly extinguished," he said, adding that one person died and another was wounded.

In Ukraine's Kharkiv region, on the border with Russia, a Russian strike hit the city of Chuguiv early Friday, destroying two private homes and damaging a hospital building, Mayor Galyna Minaeva wrote on Facebook.

Three people were wounded, Minaeva said.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov said Russian forces were "attacking with drones" and an "explosion was heard in the city", warning residents to take shelter.

The overnight strikes into Friday morning followed "frank" talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday.

Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Rubio said Lavrov shared new ideas on resolving the conflict which he promised to present to US President Donald Trump, but played down the prospect of a breakthrough.

The pair met hours after Moscow pummeled Kyiv for a second straight night, and as the United Nations said the number of victims from Russian attacks was at its highest level in three years.
