DHAKA, June 19, 2025 (BSS) – To honour the martyrs of the July Uprising, a monument named ‘Gono Minar’ (People’s Monument), will be built at the Bijoy Saroni Crossing in the city.
A civil society forum under the banner of Gono Minar Implementation Committee, made the announcement at a press conference held at Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University here today.
The monument will be set up in the green space between Bijoy Smarani and Bir Uttam Major General Azizur Rahman Road. The committee will raise public donation for its construction.
Speaking at the press conference, Bangla Academy Director General Mohammad Azam said, “Remembering the resistance of July fighters is not just about showing respect but also building our identity and awareness. We want the Gono Minar to be in such a place where people from all walks of life can come and connect with our history.”
Filmmaker and architect Kamar Ahmad Simon said, “Monuments and museums both help preserve history, but monuments are open and attract more people. That’s why we chose to build a Minar.”
He added that the monument will feature 250 years of resistance history of this land. It will also include the names of 1,400 martyrs of July Uprising, recognized by the United Nations.
“This monument will be built with the people’s effort, beyond political divisions and for everyone,” he said.
Prof. Samina Luthfa of Sociology Department, Khorshed Alam, associate professor of Mass Communication and Journalism department of Dhaka University and writer Mohammad Romel, were present, among others, at the press conference.
