Yunus’s bail extended in labour law violation case

DHAKA, April 16, 2024 (BSS) – A special court here today extended till May 23 the period of bail granted to Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in a case filed against them for violating labour law.

Judge MA Awal of Labour Appellate Tribunal passed the order as Dr Muhammad Yunus appeared before the court and pleaded for permanent bail in the case.

Advocate Abdullah Al Mamun moved the plea for Dr Yunus, while senior advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE).

Dhaka's 3rd Labour Court on January 1, 2024, convicted and sentenced Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunu, Grameen Telecom's director and former managing director Md Ashraful Hasan, members of Board of Directors Nur Jahan Begum and Md Shahjahan to six-month jail in a case filed against them for the labour law.

The court however, allowed the four convicts one-month interim bail on condition of filing appeal against the conviction.

DIFE Inspector Arifuzzaman filed the case on September 9, 2021, for violating labour laws like not regularizing 101 staff and not establishing a welfare fund for the laborers, among others.
