DHAKA, Feb 10, 2026 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) has exempted vehicles belonging to the Postal Department from the transport restrictions imposed for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and Referendum.
The EC Secretariat today sent a directive to the Road Transport and Highways Division to take necessary measures in this regard.
According to the EC directive, the upcoming election includes provisions for ‘IT-Supported Postal Ballots’ for eligible voters residing both within the country and abroad. Over 1.5 million voters have registered to exercise their franchise through this system via the “Postal Vote BD” app.
The Directorate of Posts has been entrusted with the responsibility of delivering these ballots to the offices of the respective Returning Officers.
Consequently, the EC decided to keep Postal Department vehicles out of the purview of the movement ban to facilitate this essential service and ensure that no voter is disenfranchised due to logistical delays.
Earlier, the Road Transport and Highways Division issued a notification imposing a ban on various types of motorized vehicles, including taxi cabs, pickups, microbuses, and trucks, from 12:00 midnight on February 11 to 12:00 midnight on February 12.
However, as per the commission's latest decision, postal vehicles engaged in ballot transportation will be allowed to operate freely during this period. The EC has formally requested the Road Transport and Highways Division to take the necessary steps to implement this exemption and ensure the security of the mail carrying the ballot.
