Khaleda Zia was patron of democracy: Dulu

LALMONIRHAT, Feb 9, 2026 (BSS) - BNP National Executive Committee Organising Secretary Asadul Habib Dulu has said that Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was the patron of democracy and an uncompromising leader who never bowed to dictatorship.


He made the remarks while addressing an election rally as the chief guest at the Government Aditmari Model School and College ground in Bhadai union of Aditmari upazila on Sunday night.


The rally was organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in support of party nominee Rokon Uddin Babul, the candidate for Lalmonirhat-2 (Aditmari-Kaliganj) constituency, ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament election.


Dulu, also the BNP candidate for Lalmonirhat-3 constituency, said Khaleda Zia never compromised with autocratic forces to protect democracy. “She did not flee the country or abandon the people; instead, she waged a long struggle through movements to restore democratic rights,” he said, adding that her role was instrumental in creating a relatively free and fair electoral environment.


He also highlighted Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to achieving food self-sufficiency through the introduction of high-yield rice varieties, mechanised farming, irrigation systems, and development initiatives .   


These include canal-digging programmes that strengthened the country’s economic foundation.


The meeting was chaired by Bhadai Union BNP President Mozammel Haque and moderated by Upazila BNP Joint Convener Abdur Rouf Rubel.


Among others, District BNP Vice President and Lalmonirhat-2 BNP candidate Rokon Uddin Babul, former Upazila BNP Convener Aminul Islam, former Member Secretary Salequzzaman Pramanik, Senior Joint Convener Habibur Rahman Habi, Joint Convener Nadirul Islam Manik, Nurer Alam Siddique Babu and Jubo Dal Convener Idris Ali addressed the rally.


At the end of the rallies, he formally handed over the BNP’s electoral symbol, Sheaf of Paddy, to Rokon Uddin Babul and called on voters of the people to unite and vote for the symbol to ensure his victory.
