KHULNA, Feb 7, 2026 (BSS) - Ahead of the 13th national election, the Muslim League, an old political party and strong based in Khulna’s soil, has suddenly become active in Khulna, extending its support to the BNP in Khulna-2 constituency to sustain its political presence.
Although the veteran organisation initially planned to field candidates in three constituencies of Khulna, it eventually refrained from contesting the election. Instead, the party decided to support the BNP candidate in Khulna-2.
Insider of the party (Muslim League) said Khulna was once a stronghold of the Muslim League.
The party’s founding president Khan A Sabur was an undisputed leader in the region.
Following his death, many supporters gradually shifted towards the BNP.
Since the 1979 national election, the party failed to achieve notable success. One of its limited achievements was in 1984, when Sheikh Sirajul Islam was elected chairman in the last municipal election under the party’s nomination. Later, his joining the Jatiya Party further weakened the organisation.
During the period of military rule under Ershad, the party maintained a comparatively strong organisational structure. However, over time, it lost its presence at the upazila level.
