FENI, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman pledged to establish government-run medical colleges in all 64 districts of the country, announcing plans to set up such institutions in the remaining 31 districts, including Feni.
"No district in the country will be deprived of a medical college. There are already 33 government medical colleges in 33 districts, and the remaining 31 districts will have theirs," he said.
Jamaat Ameer made the announcement while addressing a major election rally at Feni Government Pilot High School today, reaffirming his party's commitment to expanding healthcare education and facilities nationwide.
Referring to Feni, he said the district previously had a private medical college that is no longer operational and would now benefit from a government-run medical institution.
The Jamaat Ameer also outlined plans to establish specialised hospitals in every district, saying medical colleges would serve as the foundation for developing these healthcare facilities.
"We are committed to setting up specialised hospitals in every district, and medical colleges will play a key role in preparing the manpower needed for these hospitals," he said.
The rally was attended by party leaders, activists and supporters from across the district. Dr Rahman arrived at the venue by helicopter, and his speech was broadcast on large LED screens for the crowd.
"In Bangladesh, the son of a king becomes a king and the son of a minister becomes a minister. We want to change this system. Leadership must be earned through qualifications and merit," Shafiqur Rahman said, adding that even the son of a rickshaw puller should have the opportunity to become prime minister through education and hard work.
He further added that Jamaat-e-Islami, along with its alliance partners, would continue its struggle against corruption, authoritarianism and inequality. "We want a Bangladesh where everyone, regardless of background, enjoys equal rights and opportunities," he said.
Dr Rahman also stressed the importance of respecting women and condemned violence against them, warning that attacks on women would not be tolerated. "Respect for women is non-negotiable," he said, referring to recent attacks on female party members.
Later, he called on voters to support change in the upcoming national election, urging them to vote for a free, prosperous and just Bangladesh.
The rally was chaired by Feni District Jamaat Ameer Mufti Abdul Hannan. Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary Abu Taher Mohammad Masum, JAGPA Vice President and Spokesperson Rasheed Pradhan, DUCSU Vice President Md Abu Sadik Kayeem, and leaders from workers' and student organisations also addressed the gathering.
