BAGERHAT, Jan 25, 2026 (BSS) - BNP-nominated candidate for the Bagerhat-3 constituency (Rampal-Mongla) Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam held a meeting with fishermen and fish traders at Dublarchar this morning.
The meeting took place at 11:00 am in the traditional fishing township of Dublarchar, located at the edge of the Sundarbans and surrounded by the sea. Dr. Faridul Islam attended the event as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, he recalled the tragic loss of countless fishermen during Cyclone Sidr, Aila, and other subsequent natural disasters. Paying tribute to those who lost their lives, he said, "The fishermen of this region do not merely earn their livelihood from the sea; they constantly risk their lives to protect the Sundarbans and coastal waters. Yet, they remain the most vulnerable during disasters."
Dr. Faridul Islam pledged that, if elected, he would take effective measures to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of coastal fishermen. His commitments included strengthening disaster preparedness and safety systems, rehabilitating disaster-affected fishermen, ensuring fair market prices for fish, developing modern infrastructure, and providing easy access to credit facilities.
He also promised to end harassment of Sundarbans-dependent fishermen and ensure humane and transparent management.
Dublarchar Fishermen Group President freedom fighter Haji Kamal Uddin Ahmed addressed the meeting as a special guest. He highlighted the long-standing deprivation of fishermen, the lack of adequate post-disaster support and ongoing livelihood uncertainty faced by the community.
Hundreds of fishermen and fish traders from Dublarchar and nearby areas attended the event.
