CUMILLA, Aug 18, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Chauddagram upazila of the district in 2023.

Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Fifth Court Mohammad Sultan Uddin Pradhan pronounced the verdict around 11.30am. Convict, Md Azad, 38, was present in the courtroom when the verdict was delivered.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Enamul Haque Sarker confirmed the matter.

According to the prosecution, Azad, son of Md Kabir Hossain of Basantapur village under Munshirhat union in Chauddagram upazila, killed his wife, Tania Begum, by wrapping her with an electric wire and electrocuting her during a family dispute on the night of July 27, 2023.
Tania was the mother of three children.

The following day, Tania's mother, Maya Begum, filed a murder case with Chauddagram Police Station, accusing Azad. 

Police, after investigation, submitted a charge sheet against Azad to the court on November 15, 2025.

During the trial, the prosecution produced seven witnesses, who were examined and cross-examined. The court also reviewed various case documents, witness statements and other evidence before finding Azad guilty.
