KHULNA, Aug 11, 2026 (BSS) - A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced a 21-year-old youth to life imprisonment for killing his grandmother, allegedly over money for buying drugs and dispute over property.

The convict, Md Khalil Morol alias Irfan, was also fined Tk 20,000, in default of which to  serve another six months in jail.

Judge Md Manjurul Imam of the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict today. Bench Assistant Md Mazaharul Islam confirmed the matter.

Irfan, son of Md Kamrul Morol of Srikonthapur Uttarpara village in Paikgachha upazila, was present in the courtroom during the pronouncemen of verdict

According to court sources, Irfan was a first-year honours student of the Political Science Department at BL College in Khulna.

The victim, Nur Jahan alias Khano Bibi, was his grandmother.

Irfan's mother, Fatema Khatun, had allegedly been pressuring the victim to transfer much of her property to her grandson. The issue frequently triggered family disputes, while local elders made several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter.

Court sources said Irfan became involved in drug abuse despite being a student and often assaulted his grandmother for money to buy drugs. His mother allegedly provided him with money for drugs. When the grandmother protested, she was subjected to severe abuse.

At one point, Irfan's father handed him over to police, but his mother later secured his release.

On December 28, 2020, Irfan allegedly vandalised household belongings in the morning to obtain money for drugs.

His grandmother tried to stop him. Around noon, when he attempted to climb a tree to collect coconuts, she again obstructed him.

At around 1:30pm, taking advantage of the absence of others at home, Irfan allegedly attacked his grandmother with a sharp weapon and fled the scene.

She died on the spot.

The victim's daughter, Fuli Begum, subsequently filed a case with the court the same day.

Inspector (Operations) Debashish Das, the investigating officer, submitted a charge sheet against Irfan on February 25, 2021.

On February 10, 2022, the charges were accepted by the court of Senior District and Sessions Judge Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury.

The case was later transferred to the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal for disposal.
