TANGAIL, Aug 9, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Basail upazila of the district in 2019.
Senior District and Sessions Judge Hafizur Rahman pronounced the verdict at noon.
According to the brief case details, Shahinur Rahman, 37, son of Samad Mia of Basail upazila, had been married to Swapna for 15 years. The couple frequently quarreled after their marriage.
On the morning of October 5, 2019, an argument broke out between Shahinur and Swapna. At one point, Shahinur allegedly assaulted his wife, inflicting serious injuries to different parts of her body, before fleeing the scene.
Locals later took Swapna to Tangail General Hospital where the attending physician declared her dead.
Following the incident, the victim's father, Mannan Mia, filed a case with Basail Police Station.
After examining the statements of 13 witnesses, the court found Shahinur guilty and sentenced him to death. The court also fined him Taka 100,000.
Tangail Court Inspector Azharul Islam confirmed the verdict, saying the accused was present in court when the judgment was delivered. He was subsequently sent to jail.
