DHAKA, July 19, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today convicted and sentenced two
muggers to death for stabbing one Shafikul Alam after he resisted an attempt
to snatch his belongings in the city's Kalyanpur Bus Stand in 2005.
Judge Mosaddek Minhaj of Dhaka fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge
Court pronounced the verdict in absence of the convicts Md Sohel Rana alias
Kalu and Md Nazim Uddin alias Nozu, as they are still at large and were tried
in absentia.
The court also fined them Taka 50,000 each, additional public prosecutor Md
Khalilur Rahman told BSS.
According to the case documents, at around 4:15 am on June 22, 2005, the
victim, Shafikul Alam, arrived at Kalyanpur Bus Stand in Dhaka by a bus of SR
Paribahan from Bogura and was heading to a friend's house. When he reached in
front of Asia Cinema Hall, three muggers intercepted him and threatened with
sharp weapons in an attempt to rob him.
As they forcibly snatched his cash and mobile phone, Shafikul resisted,
triggering a scuffle during which the assailants repeatedly stabbed him,
leaving him critically injured.
Later, Shafikul died while undergoing treatment at a hospital. Following the
incident, his father, Md Akbar Ali, filed a case with Mirpur Model Police
Station.
