DHAKA, June 2, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to one month's imprisonment and fined him Taka 2,000 for covering his motorcycle's number plate with scotch tape to evade detection by AI-powered traffic cameras in the capital.
A team from the City Intelligence Analysis Division of police arrested Md Lablu Haque, 38, from the Lalbagh area and produced him before a special magistrate's court, which convicted him for the offence committed on May 19, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman told a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre.
The case came to light after a video clip went viral on social media showing Lablu riding his motorcycle in the Karwan Bazar area with the last three digits of the number plate covered with scotch tape in an apparent attempt to avoid detection by traffic cameras.
Anisur said the Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) launched an investigation into the incident on a priority basis and brought the offender to justice.
Urging city residents to comply with traffic rules, he called on motorists not to resort to unlawful means to evade the AI-based traffic monitoring system.
He said modern technology-based surveillance systems are being used effectively to maintain road discipline, while AI-powered cameras are playing a vital role in detecting traffic law violations.
