Man to die in Chandpur murder case

CHANDPUR, May 18, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death in a murder case filed over the killing of a trolley driver in a land dispute at Shikirchar village under Matlab Uttar upazila of the district in 2020.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (Second Court) Md. Kamal Hossain delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon, sentencing Arif Hossain Bepari, 43, son of Taiyab Ali Bepari, to death. 

The court also fined him Taka 1 lakh and ordered an additional two years of imprisonment in default of payment, a court official said.

According to the case details, a long-standing dispute over land existed between the victim's family and Mizanur Rahman alias Balu Mizan. On the night of June 29, 2020, around 11.30 pm, Wasim was allegedly called out of his house by the accused and later hacked to death with sharp weapons and his body was dumped in bushes beside an irrigation project embankment near the village. Later, family members recovered the body the following morning.

Following the incident, the victim's mother, Jahanara Begum, filed a murder case with Matlab Uttar Police Station on June 30, 2020, accusing six people.

The accused included Mizanur Rahman alias Balu Mizan, Arif Hossain Bepari, Md. Azad Bepari, Md. Karim Bepari, Salma Begum and Md. Quddus Bepari.

Sub-Inspector of Matlab Uttar Police Station, Md. Abdul Awal, investigated the case and submitted the charge sheet to the court on May 31, 2021.

State counsel Kamal Uddin said the court recorded testimonies from 25 witnesses during the trial. After examining witness statements, case documents and the confession of the accused, the judge delivered the verdict.

The court acquitted the remaining accused as the allegations against them could not be proven.
