Ex-DGFI Director Afzal Naser sent to jail in attempt to murder case

DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sent to jail former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) director and dismissed Lieutenant Colonel Md Afzal Naser in a case filed over the alleged attempt to murder of Jagannath University (JnU) student Anik Kumar Das during the July Mass Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order as police produced Naser before the court after end of his three-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of probe.

Md Afzal Naser was placed on a three-day remand in the case on May 11. 

Earlier on May 5, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Zunayed had placed him on a three-day remand in the case.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Bangladesh Police arrested Afzal Naser from his residence in Mirpur DOHS on March 30, 2026.

According to the case documents, Anik was shot by activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League in front of the main gate of the university on July 16, 2024. He was first taken to National Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.

The victim later filed the case against 253 people on November 21, 2024.
