DHAKA, Mar 10, 2026 (BSS) – A court here today issued arrest warrants against 22 individuals in connection with the killing of mentally disabled youth Tofazzal Hossain, who was suspected of theft, inside Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at Dhaka University (DU).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order, accepting charge-sheet filed by Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
According to the case documents, on the night of September 18, 2024, Tofazzal was wandering near the gate of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall. Some university students reportedly caught him and first took him to the guest room of the hall’s main building. Accusing him of mobile phone theft, they allegedly beat him with fists and kicks.
Realizing that he was mentally ill, the students then took him to the hall’s canteen and gave him food. Later, some unruly students reportedly took him to the guest room of the hall’s south building, tied his hands to a window, and beat him mercilessly with a stamp, hockey stick, and sticks, causing him to lose consciousness. He was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) around 1:00 am in a critically injured state, where doctors declared him dead.
In connection with the incident, Muhammad Amanullah, supervisor of the university’s Estate Office, filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station the following day, September 19. On December 30, 2024, Inspector Md Asaduzzaman of Shahbagh Police Station submitted the charge sheet in court, naming 21 DU students as accused.
Citing irregularities in the initial investigation, the Dhaka University administration expressed dissatisfaction with the police-submitted charge sheet. On February 26, 2025, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to reinvestigate the case. Subsequently, on December 15, 2025, PBI’s Additional Police Superintendent Hannanul Islam submitted a new charge sheet to the court, naming 28 individuals as accused.
The accused are-Md Jalal Mia, Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh, Al Hossain Sazzad, Md Mottakin Sakin Shah, Suman Mia, Wazibul Alam, Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Sakib Raihan, Yasin Ali, Yamujjaman alias Yam, Fazle Rabbi, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, Mehedi Hasan Imran, Ratul Hasan, Sultan Mia, Nasir Uddin, Mobashwer Billah, Shishir Ahmed, Mohsin Uddin alias Shafi, Abdullahil Kafi, Sheikh Ramzan Ali Rocky, Rashed Kamal Anik, Moniruzzaman Sohag, Abu Raihan, Redowanur Rahman Parvez, Rabbikul Riad, and Ashraf Ali Munshi.
Of the 28, Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh and Wazibul Alam are on bail, while Jalal Mia, Al Hossain Sazzad, Md Mottakin Sakin Shah and Sumon Mia are in jail. The court today issued arrest warrant against the 22 fugitive accused.
