SANGSAD BHABAN, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan today informed parliament that the government has undertaken an initiative to prepare a comprehensive list of all martyrs of the Liberation War.

He said this while responding to a starred tabled question from treasury bench member Md. Ruhul Amin Dulal (Pirojpur-3) in the House today.

The minister said that currently the number of gazetted martyred freedom fighters stands at 6,480 under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

According to category-wise gazette records, the number includes 3,698 civilian mar tyrs, 1,541 from the armed forces, 817 from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 423 from the police, and 1 from the Ansar. In addition, 560 martyred intellectuals have been officially gazetted.

Azam Khan noted that an uncountable number of people were victims of genocide during the Liberation War. “It is unfortunate that even after so many years of independence, a proper and comprehensive list of all martyrs could not be prepared,” he said, adding that the country achieved its independence through their ultimate sacrifices.

Highlighting the importance of the matter, the minister said the current government had pledged in its election manifesto to compile a complete list of martyrs based on intense research.

“Necessary operations have already been undertaken to implement this commitment,” he added.

Elaborating on the initiative, the minister said steps include organising expert meetings involving Liberation War researchers, holding a series of consultations with relevant stakeholders, and formulating a detailed and realistic work plan, which is now being implemented.

He expressed hope that through these measures, it would be possible to prepare an accurate and widely acceptable list of all martyrs, including victims of genocide, and ensure due recognition and honour for their sacrifices.
