SANGSAD BHABAN, July 15, 2026 (BSS) -  Leader of the Opposition Dr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman today called for building a corruption free Bangladesh, paying profound tribute to all martyrs, freedom fighters, and those who were injured or permanently disabled in the great Liberation War, the July Mass Uprising and other significant events in the country’s past and recent history.

Delivering his closing speech at the budget session of the Jatiya Sangsad, he praised the Prime Minister, the Speaker and the Parliament Secretariat for conducting the parliamentary proceedings, expressing hope that the House would reflect the aspirations of the people.

“The more positive and effective the activities of Parliament become, the greater the people’s confidence will be, encouraging everyone to contribute to nation-building,” he said.

Expressing sympathy for the families of those who lost their lives in recent floods, landslides and drowning incidents, the Opposition Leader urged the government to further strengthen relief, rehabilitation and assistance programmes for the affected people.

He also requested the government to consider providing special financial assistance to the families of the deceased.

Highlighting the need to resolve waterlogging in the capital, Dr. Shafiqur stressed the importance of adopting a long-term and coordinated plan, saying Dhaka, as the face of the country, should be transformed into a clean, livable and modern city through planned development.

Welcoming the increased allocation for the education sector, he underscored the need to give greater priority to primary education, technical education and value-based education.

He also called for bringing qualified educational institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme through a transparent selection process.

The Opposition Leader said restoring discipline in the economy and taking a firm stance against corruption were the demands of the time.

He said combating corruption requires the collective efforts of the government, administration, business community and political leaders.

Dr. Shafiqur praised the Prime Minister’s anti-corruption stance and expressed hope for more effective measures to tackle the problem.

Welcoming the government’s initiatives to preserve the memory of the July Mass Uprising, he said the decision to inaugurate the July Memorial Museum on August 5 would fulfill a long-standing expectation of the people.

He also described the move to strengthen the activities of the July Memorial Foundation as a positive initiative and called for preserving comprehensive records of the martyrs and the injured for future generations.

The Opposition Leader also appreciated the dedicated efforts of the Parliament Secretariat, security personnel, media professionals and all officials and employees concerned for successfully conducting the budget session.
