DHAKA, Mar 26, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo today observed the country's 56th Independence and National Day with due dignity, paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and highlighting Bangladesh's economic progress and global engagement.
The day-long programme began at the embassy premises with the hoisting of the national flag by Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan Md. Daud Ali, followed by a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs.
Messages from the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out, while a documentary on March 26 was screened.
The session concluded with special prayers seeking eternal peace for the martyrs and continued prosperity of the nation.
In the second half, a reception was held at Hotel New Otani in Tokyo with Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kunimitsu Ayano as the chief guest.
Ayano congratulated Bangladesh on its Independence Day and reaffirmed Japan's commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership.
"Japan welcomes the successful holding of a credible and peaceful general election in Bangladesh. We are committed to further consolidating our 'Strategic Partnership' with the newly formed government," she said.
She also noted Bangladesh's strategic geographic position and its growing importance in regional economic development.
Bangladesh Ambassador paid tribute to the martyrs and said the country has entered a new phase of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
"Under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh has entered a new era. Our newly elected government is determined to build a knowledge-based and inclusive society through renewed vigor, consistent policies, and economic reforms," he said.
Highlighting bilateral ties, he said, Bangladesh offers strong investment opportunities and thanked Japan for facilitating employment of Bangladeshi skilled workers.
A message from Taro Aso, President of the Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship League, was also read, praising Bangladesh's economic progress and reaffirming Japan's continued support.
The event was attended by Japanese ministers, parliamentarians, diplomats, business leaders and members of the Bangladeshi community.
