Sundarganj people happy to be saved from river erosion

GAIBANDHA, August 3, 2021(BSS)- The residents of Sundarganj upazila of the district are happy, tension free and expressed their satisfaction over the development works of BWDB as their homesteads located in Kashembazar area under Horipur union of the upazila had been saved from the Teesta river erosion.

With the rise of water level of the Teesta river, the erosion took a serious turn at Kashembazar point and its adjoining areas of the upazila last month and devoured many houses and croplands, locals said.

Many people of the areas had taken shelters at other places of the upazila losing their homesteads and arable lands. In this situation, people who were residing in kashembazar area had been passing day and night in deep anxiety for fear of river erosion.

They requested local lawmaker Barrister Shameem Haidar Patwary to take necessary action to protect Kashembazar and its adjoining areas from the erosion of the river.

In response, the lawmaker urged Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) to start river bank protection works in the area.

BWDB, Kurigram started the river bank protection works in the area on an emergency basis and to dump geo textile, sand bags and geo tubes in risky areas adjacent to Kashembazar.

As a result, the people of the areas were saved from the rapid river erosion.

School teacher Md. Mokbul Hossain said they were free from tension now as the erosion by the river had been stopped.

Nafiul Islam Jimi, chairman of Horipur union, said the people of Kashembazar and its adjoining areas are happy and satisfied over the development works of BWDB, Kurigram.

Executive Engineer of BWDB of Gaibandha Md. Mokhlasur Rahman said the BWDB of Kurigram had been implementing the river bank protection work as most of the portion of the river’s left bank is located under Kurigram district.

Executive Engineer of BWDB of Kurigram Ariful Hoque Tutul said river bank protection work of the areas was going on in full swing at the direct supervision of the local lawmaker.
