RAJSHAHI, Sept 4, 2026 (BSS) - Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Sri Krishna and one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community, was celebrated in Rajshahi today with various programmes and religious fervor.

The day's programmes included worship, Geeta Jagna, Kirtan, colourful rallies, distribution of sweets and discussions.

The Rajshahi city unit of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and members of the Hindu Dharma Kalyan Trust organised celebrations at Hanumanjiur Akhra.

A colourful procession was also brought out in the city this afternoon by the Rajshahi Metropolitan Committee of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Welfare Front.

Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator and Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Riton attended the procession as chief guest. 

He greeted members of the Sanatan community and called for maintaining communal harmony, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence.

The procession, led by President of the welfare front's Rajshahi metropolitan committee Achintya Kumar Biswas Santu and General Secretary Ashok Kumar Saha, paraded through several city roads. Leaders and members of the Sanatan community from different professions also took part.

Speaking at the programme, participants urged people to follow the ideals and teachings of Lord Krishna to promote peace, harmony and stability in society.

Riton said Bangladesh has a long tradition of communal harmony, with people of different faiths observing their religious festivals freely.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi University (RU) administration observed Janmashtami on its campus with a colourful rally and discussion.

The programme was presided over by Professor Komol Krishna Biswash, president of the RU Central Temple Operating Committee.

In Durgapur upazila, Janmashtami was observed through a daylong programme, including a colorful rally. The Upazila Janmashtami Udjapan Committee and Durgapur Central Kali Mandir jointly organised the celebrations.

Janmashtami was observed also in Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Bogura, Joypurhat, Sirajganj, Pabna and Natore districts.
