TANGAIL, Sept 1, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife in Sakhipur upazila of the district in 2025.

Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman pronounced the verdict at noon in presence of the convict.

The convict was Md Mehedi Hasan, 38, son of Haider Ali of Atiapara area in Ichhadighi village under Sakhipur upazila. The court also fined him Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail.

Public Prosecutor of the court Md Shafiqul Islam Ripon said Mehedi had long been addicted to online gambling and he used to torture his wife Kakoli over gambling money and various family issues.

As part of the ongoing abuse, Mehedi took out a knife hidden under the bed and stabbed Kakoli in the back on the morning of August 3, 2025. Locals rescued her and took her to Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

On the day of the incident, Kakoli's brother Md Badal Mia filed a murder case with Sakhipur Police Station.

Following an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court. A total of 13 witnesses testified in the case.
