Five detained over banned political group's activity in Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 15, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) today detained five people for allegedly carrying out an activity of a banned political organization in the city.

Sonadanga Police Station launched a special operation around 10:30 am and detained them from in front of the Veterinary Hospital on the old Gallamari Road in West Baniakhhamar area, KMP said.

The detainees were identified as Ali Hossain, 24, son of Nazrul Islam of Madina Nagar Goli under Labanchara Police Station; Md Imon, 26, son of Julhas of Darga Road area under Khulna Sadar; Ashraful Islam, 26, son of Siddiqur Rahman of Sachibunia Switchgate under Labanchara; Abdus Samad, 52, son of late Arshad Ali of the old Gallamari area under Sonadanga Model Police Station; and Md Roni Sardar, 27, son of Md Shafiqul Sardar of Chirar Mill Goli in old Gallamari. 

Police said the detainees allegedly gathered people under the guise of distributing food as part of a program centering August 15. The activity was intended to revive the organisational activities of the banned Awami League and could create disorder and destabilise the prevailing situation. 

KMP said legal proceedings against the detainees were underway.

Police remain on alert to prevent any attempt by banned political organisations to carry out organisational activities or make public appearances in violation of the restrictions, it added.
