KURIGRAM, Aug 10, 2026 (BSS) - A fisherman was killed and five others were seriously injured after coming into contact with a live electric line that had fallen into the Buridah River while they were fishing in Rajarhat upazila of the district this afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Md Rubel Mia, 28, son of Rashid Molla of Haridashwar Taluk village in the upazila.
According to police and local residents, a group of fishermen from Haridashwar Taluk village went to the Buridah River around noon to catch fish.
At one stage, an electric pole beside the river reportedly collapsed, causing live wires to fall into the water. The fishermen then came into contact with the electrified water and suffered electric shocks.
Local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the fishermen, but Rubel Mia died at the scene.
The injured were initially taken to local hospitals for treatment. Some of them were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
The injured were identified as Mozammel Haque, 28, Abdur Rahman, 32, Aminul Islam, 19, Shakil Mia, 22, and Anichur Mia, 29. All of them are residents of the same village.
Rajarhat Police Station Sub-Inspector Atikur Rahman confirmed the incident.
Further investigation and necessary legal action will be taken, he said.
