KHULNA, July 20, 2026 (BSS) – Khulna University (KU) today released fry of indigenous tengra and shing fish produced at the hatchery of its Fisheries and Marine Resource Technology (FMRT) Discipline under a research project aimed at conserving native fish species and strengthening research capacity.

The fish fry were produced under the sub-project titled "Gene Bank Development and Research Capability Enhancement of Small Indigenous Fish Species," funded by the university's Research and Innovation Centre.

The release programme was inaugurated by Khulna-1 lawmaker Amir Ejaz Khan, who released the fry into a pond adjacent to the university's administrative building. 

Later, the fry were released into different water bodies across the campus.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest underscored the importance of such research initiatives in conserving the genetic diversity of small indigenous fish species, developing sustainable breeding technologies and promoting research-based fisheries resource management.

Among others present were KU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Harun-or-Rashid Khan, Treasurer Prof. Dr. Md. Nurunnabi, Acting Registrar Prof. Dr. S.M. Mahbubur Rahman, FMRT Discipline Head Prof. Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Principal Investigator Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Sarowar, Khan Jahan Ali Hall Provost Prof. Dr. Md. Khasrul Alam, Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Hall Provost Prof. Sharif Mohammad Khan, along with teachers, students, university officials and employees.

The project is designed to support the conservation of indigenous fish genetic resources while enhancing research capabilities and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices in Bangladesh.
