GAIBANDHA, MAR 26, 2026 (BSS) - Astomi Snan, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Hindu Community, was held in the river of Brahmaputra of the district today with due respect, much religious fervor and festivity like other parts of the country.
Marking the festival, a large number of Hindu devotees including women from different parts of the districts and its neighboring areas had gathered at western sides of the Brahmaputra and took bath in the river from 6 am.
According to their faith the Hindu devotees believe that to take bath in the river of Brahmaputra at Chilmari area is very significant to get rid of all curse and sins so many Hindu devotees from far flung areas of the country including India and Nepal had come to Chilmarighat in Kurigram district to participate in the ritual.
Chilmari UNO M. Mahmudul- ul-Hasan said the necessary measures had been taken in the Chilmarighat, biggest spot for the Astomi Snan in the northern districts, to help the Hindu devotees perform their holy snan in the river peacefully side by side with ensuring law and order situation deploying police and ansar personnel there.
Apart from this, the Astomi Snan was also held in the river along its western side at different spots including Horipur, Lalchamar, Kamarjani, Balashighat, Fulchharighat and Saghata of the district Gaibandha district, said Poresh Chandra Saha, secretary of Bangladesh Puja Utjapon Parishad, Gaibandha district chapter.
Fairs were also held on the side of the river and at the plain land including the hat and bazaars of the district on the occasion.
