LALMONIRHAT, Feb 26, 2026 (BSS) - A programme to sell fresh and unadulterated essential commodities at subsidised prices began in Lalmonirhat today in a bid to curb the rising prices of daily necessities during the holy month of Ramadan.
The initiative was launched in front of the BNP office at Barobari union in Lalmonirhat district at 8:00am, taking into consideration the purchasing power of lower and middle-income people.
Under the directives of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, the Union BNP is operating the programme every day from 8:00am to 2:00pm throughout Ramadan.
On the first day, a large number of people were seen standing in long queues in front of the stalls to purchase essential items at fixed prices.
The commodities are being sold at reduced rates, including milk at Tk 50 per litre, four eggs at Tk 30, live chicken at Tk 150 per kg, dressed broiler at Tk 220 per kg and beef at Tk 650 per kg.
"It is a significant support from the local BNP as milk is being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100 per litre and dressed broiler at Tk 300 per kg in the local market," said M Hasmat Ali, a resident of Ward No. 3 of Barobari union.
Another resident, Mohammad Mofazzal Ali of Ward No. 5, said the initiative was timely and would help keep the prices of essentials within a tolerable limit during Ramadan.
Abdul Halim, a resident of adjacent Mahendranagar union, praised the initiative and said the sufferings of low-income people would be reduced considerably if similar programmes were launched in every union. He added that the move would also create a positive impact on the local market.
Stall Manager and Union BNP Assistant Office Secretary M Ataur Rahman said special supervision has been imposed to ensure the supply of fresh and safe commodities so that people can purchase items for iftar and sehri without concern.
Union BNP Senior Vice-President Golam Mawla Jafran said that following the minister's instructions, the programme would continue throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
Locals said the initiative is not only a sales programme but also a reflection of social responsibility, aimed at supporting low-income people amid the ongoing price hike of essential commodities.
