BOGURA, Dec 8, 2025 (BSS) – Onion prices in Bogura has witnessed a sharp decline, bringing relief to consumers after two days of abnormal volatility, following the news of opening fresh Letters of Credit (LC) for import from India.

Market sources said the price of onion fell by Tk 30 to Tk 50 per kilogram within a single day, significantly easing the burden on buyers. The sudden fall was evident during a visit to the city’s wholesale Rajabazar, where traders confirmed the impact of the new import arrangement.

For a prolonged period, onion prices remained uncontrolled due to the suspension of Indian onion export and supply shortages. Even with the arrival of newly harvested local onions, prices were not declining.

Retail and wholesale traders said onion sold today in the wholesale market at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg, whereas until yesterday it was being sold at Tk 150 per kg.

Besides, newly harvested local onions are being sold in the retail market at Tk 80 to Tk 85 per kg, while wholesalers are charging Tk 65 per kg.

Speaking about the price hike, Abdul Mannan, a wholesaler in Rajabazar, said the main reason behind the higher price was the large traders who collect onions from various markets, claiming that there was no availability at the market.

With the sudden price fall, general consumers expressed satisfaction. Khorshed Alam, a resident of Namazgarh area who came for shopping, said, “We had been waiting a long time for this price drop. Buying onions at Tk 150 per kg had become impossible for middle-class families. The price reduction after the LC news has given us some relief.”

Another consumer, Sumon Ahmed, said, “Onion is an essential ingredient in cooking, but its price soared so high that we had nearly stopped using it. Now that the price has dropped, we are happy. We hope the government keeps the supply stable so that the market does not become unstable again.”

Commenting that prices have fallen solely due to the news of import, Rajabazar wholesaler Porimal Prasad Raj said many traders are selling onions at a loss after the sudden LC announcement.

However, he gave good news for consumers as the supply is increasing gradually. He said once imported onions under LC enter the market, prices may fall further and could even be sold at Tk 50 per kg.

Porimal Prasad further mentioned that traders fear prices may drop tomorrow as well. They are worried that since newly harvested local onions will be available abundantly within a short time, opening LC just before that may cause substantial loss for them.
