KHULNA, Dec 5, 2025 (BSS) - Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Russel Sheikh, the prime accused in the murder of his wife Eti Khatun, whose body was found dumped in a pond in Gopalganj.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of RAB-6 (CPC Sadar Company, Bhatiapara Camp) and RAB-11 (CPC-2 Cumilla) carried out a special drive on Thursday night in Charbakar Bazar under Debidwar Police Station in Cumilla, a RAB-6 press release said.
During the raid, RAB detained Russel Sheikh, 30, son of Md Layek Sheikh of Latifpur village in Govindapur Union under Muksudpur upazila.
According to the case statement, Russel and his wife had been involved in longstanding family disputes. Over these conflicts, Russel and several accomplices allegedly strangled Eti with a towel inside their home sometime between 8 pm on November 23 and 6 pm on November 30.
The accused later placed the body in a sack, tied four bricks to it and dumped it beneath water hyacinths in their pond on the eastern side of their house in an attempt to hide the crime.
On the evening of November 30, locals noticed the sack floating in the pond and alerted Muksudpur Police Station. Police recovered the body and took it to the station.
After the incident, family members of the victim rushed to the police station. Later, Eti's brother Md Selim, 37, filed a murder case accusing Russel and others.
RAB handed over the arrested Russel Sheikh to Cumilla Kotwali Police Station for further legal action, the press release added.
