CHATTOGRAM, Oct 9, 2025 (BSS) – A 20-storey ‘Tax Bhaban’ will be constructed in the port city aiming to facilitate efficient collection of revenue.

After more than a decade of discussions, the construction of a tax building in Agrabad is finally progressing. The project involves a 20-storey building with three basements on a 77 katha land located east of Jamburi Park, at a cost of Tk 437 crore.

Tenders for the construction will be invited soon. The building will house 1,000 officials and employees working under 10 tax commissioners.

The new building in Chattogram, covering about five lakh square feet, will be the second largest government establishment in the country after the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan. Currently, the government spends over Tk 2 crore annually on renting multiple buildings for tax-related purposes in the CDA residential area due to the lack of a dedicated tax building, project sources said.

Businesses, industrialists, investors, taxpayers, and service providers in Chattogram have to navigate between different buildings for tax-related matters, often facing challenges like flooding during the rainy season or high tide. To address this issue, a multi-storey tax building has been planned for years and is now being implemented.

The new tax building will accommodate zone offices, circle offices, tax appeal areas, appeal tribunals, and other tax-related facilities for the four tax zones in Chattogram, providing a centralized location for tax-related activities in the city.

The Chattogram Tax Building will include offices for tax lawyers, bank branches, post offices, day care centers, media centers, multipurpose halls, separate prayer rooms for men and women, staff canteens, officer canteens, and car parking.

All necessary facilities will be provided. On October 5, National Board of Revenue Member (Tax Administration and Human Resource Management) GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad and Member (Tax Policy) Barrister Mutasim Billah Faruki visited the site designated for the building.

They instructed the Director of the Chattogram Tax Building Construction Project and Tax Commissioner (Zone-3) Md. Manjur Alam to commence construction and initiate the tender process promptly.

During the inspection, several tax commissioners including Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Md. Shahin Akhter Hossain, Shamina Islam, Ayesha Siddika Shelly, Sadhan Kumar Roy, and Saiful Alam were present.

Project Director and Tax Commissioner (Zone-3) Md. Manjur Alam mentioned that the design of the 23-storey Kar Bhaban with three basements was approved by ECNEC. He expressed hope that the tender process would commence soon and the construction work would be carried out by the Public Works Department (Division-4).

Following the tender evaluation and other necessary procedures, the construction contract is expected to be signed within the current year, with construction set to begin on January 1 next year. This building is considered a dream project for the Tax family, aiming to consolidate all services under one roof. The project director emphasized the importance of maintaining quality in the construction process and expressed determination to achieve this goal.
