RANGPUR, Oct 5, 2025 (BSS) - A short-lived tornado has suddenly lashed five
unions of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur amid continuous rains damaging 1,200
thatched houses in addition to shops and uprooting hundreds of trees on
Sunday morning.
Talking to BSS at 6:30 pm after returning from tornado-hit areas, Gangachara
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmud Hasan Mridha told that the tornado hit
different villages in Sadar, Alambiditor, Nohali, Laksmitari and Kolkond
unions of the upazila at 7 am.
"The natural calamity badly hit the five unions of Gangachara upazila
damaging some 1,200 houses totally or partially and uprooting hundreds of
trees," he said.
However, the tornado did not cause any damage to the growing Aman rice crop
in the upazila.
While visiting some villages in different unions of Gangachara upazila today,
this BSS reporter found that many houses were damaged and many trees were
uprooted but growing tender plants of Aman rice plants remained intact
without any damage.
Talking to BSS today, Md Nazmul Amin of Kutub Hazirhat village in Alambiditor
union said that suddenly his thatched house was destroyed by the tornado by
blowing away its tin roof.
"My nine-year old son Mohammad Mafi suffered a head injury and a leg injury.
He was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital," said Nazmul Amin.
Widow Fani Begum of Sardarpara village in Nohali union said, "I had two rooms
in my tiny house and the tornado blew them away."
Nohali Union Parishad Chairman Md Ashraf Ali said that about 400 houses in
his union have been destroyed.
Alambiditor Union Administrator and Gangachara Upazila Cooperative Officer
Aftabuzzaman Chayan said that about 300 houses in the union have been
damaged.
UNO Mahmud Hasan Mridha said that 200 packets of dry food have already been
distributed among the tornado-affected people.
"We have requested the district administration for food and money. The
allocation is expected to reach the district administration soon to continue
relief and rehabilitation activities in the tornado-hit villages of five
unions of the upazila," he said.
"We have already started to assess the extent of damage caused by the tornado
in the upazila," the UNO added.
