SIRAJGANJ, Sept 16, 2025 (BSS) - The traditional floating jute market at Natuarpara in Kazipur upazila has gained momentum this season, drawing large crowds of farmers, traders, and buyers to the banks of the Jamuna River.

Unlike conventional markets on land, the Natuarpara haat is uniquely held on boats, forming rows across the river, turning the Jamuna into a vibrant commercial hub during the selling season.

Local sources said the market assembles every Saturday and Wednesday, offering a cost-effective platform for both buyers and sellers. Farmers from nearby char areas bring their produce by boat, significantly reducing transportation costs compared to land-based vehicles.

Due to favourable prices this season, jute cultivation has seen a notable increase in the region. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) upazila office in Kazipur, jute has been cultivated on 4,250 hectares of land this year, mostly in six unions of the char area.

The government earns substantial revenue from this traditional haat. This year, the lease for the market was set at Taka 52 lakh.

Local farmer Abdur Rahim of Natuarpara Char and Badsha Mia of Khasrajbari Char said transporting goods by boat is not only economical but also more convenient than other means, including horse-drawn carts and road vehicles.

The floating market is not limited to jute alone, as traders from other districts also arrive to buy and sell a variety of goods, making the haat a crucial point of trade and economic activity in the region.
