CHANDPUR, Sept 7, 2025 (BSS) - A total of 148 people of different ages,
mostly children, have drowned in ponds, rivers and different water bodies in
Chandpur district from January 1 to September 6 this year.
This information was provided by the Chandpur Civil Surgeon's Office, Upazila
Health Complexes and Naval Fire Station of the district.
According to information received from the Civil Surgeon's Office, 148 people
of different ages drowned in the district during the last eight months and
six days from January 1 to September 6.
Of the victims, 34 people drowned in Chandpur Sadar upazila, 25 people in
Hajiganj, 18 in Kachua, eight in Shahrasti, seven in Matlab South, nine in
Matlab North, 33 in Faridganj and 14 in Haimchar upazila.
The most recent drowning deaths happened on September 2, two children named
Dihan, 4, and Shahin Raihan, 4, drowned in a water body at Shasnkhola village
of Kadla union in Kachua upazila of the district.
On September 1, the diving team of the Chandpur River Fire Station recovered
the body of a person named Md. Abdul Mannan, 70, who went missing while
bathing in the Dhanagoda river in Matlab Uttar upazila. He was swept away by
the current of the river.
On the morning of August 13, a two-year-old child named Takrim Hasan died
after drowning in a pond in Ghilatoli area of Khadergaon union in Matlab
Dakshin upazila of the district.
On May 23, Ibrahim, 4, and Faziya, 2, of Bogula village in Charbhairabi union
under Haimchar upazila drowned in a pond.
In Chandpur Sadar, on April 9, mother Khadija Akhtar, 30, and her son Abu
Bakar, 7, drowned in a pond while they were taking bath at Bakharpur village
of Chandra union. On the same day, two-year-old girl Mansura of Sabdi village
under Balia union drowned in a pond.
On the afternoon of March 13, in Kadiya village of Kachua Upazila, Mehedi
Hasan, 5, son of auto-rickshaw driver Alam, and Jabed, 5, son of Masud
Baburchi, drowned in a pond.
Dr. Md. Shakhawat Hossain of Chandpur Civil Surgeon's Office, said that
according to the information recorded in the registers of seven upazilas
including the District Sadar Hospital, Sadar Upazila Health Complex, about
148 people have drowned in the last eight months.
