NETROKONA, Aug 31, 2025 (BSS) - Professor Dr Md Anwarul Haque and Dr Rafiqul Islam Hilali have been elected President and General Secretary respectively of the Netrokona district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) through its long-awaited triennial conference, held after 11 years.
The day-long conference, marked by festivity and fervor, took place on Saturday at the Moktarpara ground in the district town. Following the inaugural session, voting was conducted during the council session to elect the new leadership.
Five candidates vied for the top two posts, President and General Secretary. The electoral process engaged 1,515 councillors from 15 organizational units, comprising 10 upazilas and 5 pourashavas, each represented by a 101-member committee.
Later, in the evening, Chief Election Commissioner Advocate M A Auwal Selim formally handed over the results to BNP Standing Committee Member Salah Uddin, who announced it.
Professor Dr Md Anwarul Haque, contesting with the Umbrella symbol, secured a landslide victory for the post of President with 1,275 votes, while his opponent Advocate Mahfuzul Haque, who ran with the Chair symbol, bagged 211 votes.
For the post of General Secretary, Dr Rafiqul Islam Hilali emerged victorious with 746 votes, contesting with the Fish symbol. His closest rival Abdullah Al Mamun Khan Rony, who ran with the Bullock Cart symbol, received 721 votes, while S M Moniruzzaman Dudu, contesting with the Football symbol, managed 18 votes.
