National Fisheries Week inaugurated in Bagerhat

BAGERHAT, Aug 18, 2025 (BSS) - With the slogan ‘building sanctuaries makes the country rich with local fish’, the National Fisheries Week-2025 was inaugurated today in Bagerhat with much enthusiasm and participation.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bagerhat, Ahmed Kamrul Hasan, formally inaugurated the week-long programme as the chief guest at a function held at the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Auditorium at 10am.

Programme organised by the District Fisheries Office, the inaugural ceremony was held under the chairmanship of District Fisheries Officer Dr. Abul Kalam Azad.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Kamrul Hasan called for coordinated efforts among fishermen, fish farmers, and animal resource personnel for the overall development of the country's fisheries sector.

He urged the stakeholders to follow existing laws and regulations during fishing and to be cautious in the production of Renu pona (fish fry). He emphasized the importance of cultivating native species rather than giant or non-native varieties.

Former Bagerhat District BNP President MA Salam, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Fakirhat Circle) Md. Rabiul Islam Shamim, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Mostafizur Rahman, Convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement SM Saddam, officials from the Department of Fisheries, local fish farmers, entrepreneurs, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Prior to the discussion meeting, a colourful rally was brought out in the upazila town, followed by the ceremonial release of fish fry into the Upazila Sadar pond.

At the end of the programme, awards were distributed among the best fish farmers in recognition of their contributions to the fisheries sector.
