LALMONIRHAT, Aug 14, 2025 (BSS) - Due to continuous heavy rains and upstream hill inundation for several days, the water of Teesta river is flowing above the danger level.

According to the Water Development Board, the water level of the Teesta river was recorded at 52.33 meters at Dalia Point in Hatibandha upazila of the district at 12 noon today, which is 18 centimeters higher than the danger level (52.15 meters).

Earlier on Wednesday morning, the water rose seven centimeters above the danger level, but later it came down to four centimeters.

However, due to rain and upstream inundation at night, it rose again to 18 centimeters on Thursday.

The rising water level has inundated the low-lying areas of hundreds of villages in Aditmari, Kaliganj, Hatibandha, Sadar and Patgram upazilas of Lalmonirhat district.

The third phase of flooding has occurred, especially in the areas on the left bank of the Teesta.

Rural roads, homes, educational institutions, croplands and cattle farms have been submerged.

Sunil Kumar, executive engineer of the Water Development Board, said, "The water level in the Teesta is rising due to heavy rains and upstream inflow. All 44 sluice gates of the barrage have been opened to keep the situation normal. Everyone has been asked to be alert as there is a risk of flooding in the lower areas. The risky embankment is being kept under constant
observation."
