SIRAJGANJ, July 13, 2025 (BSS) – River erosion in Jamuna has washed away at least 150 houses and arable lands in the district.
At least 100 houses of Bhetua village in Chargirish union of Kazipur upazila were washed away by river water. Besides, 50 houses in Dhitpur village of Sonatani union under Shahjadpur upazila have been swept away in the river bed.
The water level of the Jamuna River continues to rise in the district.
In the last 24 hours, water level has increased by another 2 cm (centimeters) at Sirajganj point of the Jamuna River flooding various low-lying areas.
People residing on the bank of the river are worried about potential flooding in the area.
The district’s Fuljore Government Primary School, Chargirish Secondary High School and Bhetua Government Primary School of Natuarpara union in Kazipur upazila are on the verge of being washed away due to the continuous erosion by the Jamuna River.
In the char areas along the banks of the Jamuna River, extensive erosion has started in Chargirish, Nishchintapur, Khasrajbari of Kazipur Upazila, Khashkiulia Janata School area of Chauhali Upazila, Umarpur, Sthal, Teghri, Kuragachha, Langalmura, Ghorjan, Fulhara, Chaluhara, Gopalpur, Sonatani, Dhitpur, Sreepur, Kursi, Makra, Bhatdighulia, Char Thutia of Shahjadpur Upazila, Baradhuol of Belkuchi Upazila and Bhatpiari and Bahuka villages of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila.
And this erosion has already submerged many crop lands including jute and almonds in the char areas.
Officials of the local administration said that erosion has started in many places due to the rise in the Jamuna water in the last few days.
The matter has been informed to the Water Development Board, they added.
Nazmul Hossain, sub-divisional engineer of the local Water Development Board, said although the water level of Jamuna is rising. “Measures are being taken to prevent further erosion and there is no fear of flood in the district as it is still flowing below the danger mark,” he added.
